Abridged Bibliography

For those who might like to check out the scholarship I’m using, here is an abridged bibliography for the New/Old Model for the Church.

The books for the first Biblical study, Greco-Roman Meals, is fairly short. The list for books on Empire and the New Testament is much longer. The latter has more than ninety books. I shall list the key books for both sections and follow it with books on Empire for which a free sample is available on the Amazon Books site.

From Symposium to Eucharist: The Banquet in the Early Christian World, Dennis E Smith, 2009

Many Tables: The Eucharist in the New Testament and Liturgy Today, Dennis E Smith and Hal Taussig, editors 2001

In the Beginning Was the Meal: Social Experimentation and Early Christian Identity, Hal Taussig, 2009

EMPIRE (The primary books are):

The Roman Empire and the New Testament: An Essential Guide,  Warren Carter  2009

In the Shadow of Empire, Richard Horsley, editor, 2008

Empire and the New Testament, Stanley Porter and Cynthia Long Westfall, editors, 2012

Subversive Meals, Alan Streett, 2013

For the following books on Empire (as well as for the primary four books), Kindle samples are available from the Amazon website. Go to the Amazon page for the book and click on the icon of the cover. On the left are options. Click on ‘sample’. The samples usually contain the table of contents, introduction, and first chapter. (If you click on a book icon and it doesn’t give you options on the left, you aren’t to the book’s page.) This will give you a feel for the book and will tell you whether you might want to buy it or its Kindle version.
